Cramming vs spacing: and the case where cramming is genuinely correct

The received wisdom is that cramming doesn't work. That is not quite true, and pretending it is makes the advice easy to dismiss. Cramming works — for about seventy-two hours. The question is whether seventy-two hours is what you need, and it usually isn't.

What cramming actually does

Massed study — many hours, one sitting, right before the test — produces a real, measurable spike in short-term recall. It is not an illusion, and everyone who has ever crammed successfully for a Friday exam knows this perfectly well, which is why lectures about cramming from people who claim it doesn't work get ignored.

The problem is the shape of the decay afterwards. Crammed material falls off a cliff. Within a week most of it is gone; within a month, almost all of it. You have rented the knowledge, at a high hourly rate, and the lease is short.

What spacing does with the same hours

Take the identical total study time and distribute it — an hour a week for eight weeks instead of eight hours the night before. Short-term recall on exam day is comparable or better. Retention a month later is dramatically better. Retention a year later is not close.

This is the spacing effect, and what makes it remarkable is that it is nearly free: same material, same total hours, better outcome, purely from the distribution. There is very little else in learning research that offers a gain that large for a change that small. The mechanism is the one described in spaced repetition — each retrieval at the edge of forgetting flattens the curve.

When cramming is the right call

When the exam is tomorrow. Genuinely — if you are reading this the night before, close it and go and cram. Spacing is a decision you make in September, and at midnight in May the choice is between cramming and not studying, and cramming wins that one easily.

It is also defensible for material you have made a deliberate decision never to need again — a compulsory module outside your field, a ticket to be punched. Be honest with yourself about how often that is really true, because the answer people give themselves is not usually the right one, and the subject you write off in first year has a way of turning up in a final.

How to cram least badly

  1. Test yourself, don't re-read. Even under time pressure, retrieval beats review. Especially under time pressure — you have no hours to waste on fluency.
  2. Triage ruthlessly. Take a fast diagnostic quiz, find the largest gaps, and abandon the topics you cannot rescue in the time available. Trying to cover everything means covering nothing.
  3. Space it across the day you do have. Three two-hour blocks with breaks beats six unbroken hours, even inside a single day. A tiny amount of spacing is much better than none.
  4. Sleep. The all-nighter is a false economy that is very well studied — consolidation happens during sleep, and the hours you take from it are subtracted from what you retain. You will feel more prepared and perform worse.

Does cramming work?

For about seventy-two hours, yes — massed study genuinely spikes short-term recall. What it doesn't do is build anything that survives to next week, let alone to a final that covers the whole year.

Is it too late to space if my exam is in two weeks?

No. Two weeks of distributed retrieval practice is far better than one intense weekend, and the benefit shows up even at short horizons. Start now rather than deciding it's too late — that decision is the actual cost.

Should I pull an all-nighter before an exam?

No. Memory consolidation happens during sleep, and the evidence here is unusually consistent: you will feel more prepared and perform worse. The last hours are worth less than the sleep they cost.
