Testing yourself beats re-reading, and it isn't close
The testing effect is one of the most replicated findings in learning research: retrieving an answer from memory strengthens it far more than reviewing the same material again. Re-reading feels productive because the text becomes fluent, and fluency feels like knowledge. It isn't. The moment the page is gone, so is the answer.
The reason students re-read anyway is that testing yourself requires questions, and writing good questions about material you have not yet learned is a chicken-and-egg problem. That is the specific job this tool does. More on the underlying idea in active recall.
Three question formats, because they test different things

Graded against a rubric, not against a string
Most quiz tools compare your short answer to the expected answer as text. Write "the mitochondrion generates ATP through oxidative phosphorylation" when it expected "produces ATP" and you are marked wrong, which teaches you nothing except to distrust the tool.

It will tell you that your definition captured the mechanism but missed the condition it depends on — and it cites the page where that condition is stated, so you can go and read it.
