Note which column the fixes are in. None is "try harder" — every one moves a load out of your head and into the environment.
Make the first step embarrassingly small
Initiation cost is largely independent of task size, which means "revise chapter 4" and "open chapter 4" cost about the same to start and only one of them is startable. The trick is to make the stated task so small that refusing feels absurd: open the document. Write the heading. Do one question.
This is not a motivational trick to sneak yourself into two hours of work, and framing it that way stops it working. It's a genuine contract: one question is the task. That you usually continue is a side effect, and the sessions where you don't still count as kept.
Externalise everything
- Never hold the next step in your head. Write the whole sequence before starting, even for a three-step task. The step you lose is always the one you'd have remembered on a good day.
- Write intermediate results down, in full, in multi-step problems. Most "careless" errors in maths and science are working-memory drops, not carelessness, and they vanish when nothing has to be held.
- Use a visible timer, ideally analogue, where you can see the time remaining shrink. An alarm tells you time is up; a visible dial tells you time is passing, and time blindness is a problem of the second kind.
- Put the plan on a wall, not in an app behind three taps. Out of sight is genuinely out of mind here in a way it isn't for everyone.
- Externalise accountability. Body doubling — working alongside someone, in person or on a call — is one of the most consistently reported ADHD study aids and costs nothing.
Convert passive tasks into active ones
Reading a chapter is a low-stimulus, no-feedback task with no failure signal — close to the worst possible shape for an ADHD attention system. Answering questions about the same chapter is high-stimulus, immediate-feedback, and has a clear end. The material is identical; the experience is not.

Never start with the reading
Start with questions you can't yet answer. Now the reading is a search for specific answers rather than an open-ended slog, and search is far easier to sustain.

Break the session by output, not by time
"Until I've answered five questions" has a visible finish line. "For 45 minutes" does not, and an invisible finish line is what makes the last twenty minutes evaporate.

Get feedback within minutes, not hours
Self-marked quizzes, problems with answers, anything that closes the loop fast. Long-delayed feedback is where motivation leaks out.

Stand up and change something between chunks
Not a phone break — that's a different task that captures you. Movement, water, a different room. Two minutes.

Write down the interesting tangent instead of following it
A capture sheet next to you for every "oh but what about". Getting it out of your head costs three seconds and stops the forty-minute detour, without requiring you to suppress the thought.
Using urgency without relying on crisis
Many people with ADHD do their best work under deadline pressure, and the standard advice — start earlier, work steadily — asks them to operate in the mode where they function worst. The realistic approach is manufacturing urgency at safe intervals rather than waiting for the real deadline to supply it at the worst possible moment.
- Artificial deadlines with witnesses. "I'll send you my essay plan by 6pm" works; a private deadline usually doesn't.
- Short timers as pressure, not as structure — 25 minutes because it's urgent, not because a technique says so. Pomodoro often works for exactly this reason and fails when treated as a rigid rule.
- Sit timed past papers early in the term. The pressure is real, the stakes aren't, and it's genuine practice.
- Book the study group session. An appointment with another person is external urgency that doesn't require a crisis.
Design for resumption, not for streaks
Streak-based systems punish exactly the failure mode ADHD produces most often: a missed day, then the streak is broken, then the whole thing is abandoned because the record is spoiled. A system that assumes you'll miss days and makes returning frictionless will outlast a stricter one by months.
Concretely: don't let a review queue accumulate to a punishing size while you're away — cap the daily number so returning after a week is a ten-minute job rather than a 400-card wall. And keep a written "where I left off" line, because the cost of resuming is mostly the cost of reconstructing context.
What's worth getting from your institution
Formal accommodations are worth pursuing and are widely under-claimed: extra time, a separate room, permission to record lectures, extensions with a documented process rather than a negotiation each time. These are not advantages, they're adjustments to an assessment format that measures processing speed and working memory alongside the subject.
