The answer is the least useful part

A solver that hands you a number has taught you nothing and will be no help whatsoever in an exam hall. What is worth having is the method — and specifically, the method the way your course does it. There are four ways to solve a circuit and your lecturer wants one of them; there are several conventions for a Lagrangian and your marker expects yours.

Because a space holds your slides and problem sheets, the solver can follow the approach your material uses rather than the most popular approach on the internet. That is the difference between a solution you can reproduce under exam conditions and one you can only copy.

Tell it what you actually want

  • "Just part (b)." It solves part (b).
  • "Don't give me the answer — tell me which line I went wrong on." Photograph your own attempt and it will find the error and stop there.
  • "Use the method from lecture 6." With the lecture in the space, it will.
  • "Explain this properly." Deep-explain mode switches to a stronger model for the reasoning, which is slower and better.

On academic integrity — plainly

This tool can be used to cheat. So can a textbook's answer key, a friend on your course, and every homework help site that has existed for twenty years. We are not going to pretend a disclaimer changes that, and we are not going to build a tool that refuses to show its working on the theory that ignorance protects you.

What we will say is that submitting generated work as your own is misconduct at essentially every institution, the penalties are severe and increasingly well-enforced, and — more to the point — the person you cheat is yourself, in an exam hall, some months later, with no phone. Use it to understand the method. That is what it is for, and it is genuinely very good at it.

What subjects does it handle?

It is strongest on maths, physics, chemistry and engineering — the problems where there is a method to show. It reads handwritten work, printed problem sheets, diagrams and circuit drawings from a photo.

Can it check my working instead of solving it?

Yes, and this is the best way to use it. Photograph your own attempt and ask it to find the first line that goes wrong. It will point at the error rather than handing you the finished answer.

Can it use the method my course teaches?

If your course material is in the space, yes. It follows the approach and notation your slides and problem sheets use, rather than defaulting to whichever method is most common elsewhere.

Does it show its working?

Step by step, with the reasoning at each stage. Deep-explain mode uses a stronger model when a problem needs more careful reasoning than speed.
